Speakin' Deacon: What Is a Deacon?

Our series by deacons and for everyone continues with a brief breakdown of deacons and their roles/responsibilities.

Written by Brenda S. Lussier

In the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), deacons are ordained ministers of Word and Service. Alongside pastors, who are ministers of Word and Sacrament, deacons are called to connect the church with the needs of the world. Our ministry reflects Jesus’ example of servant leadership, often symbolized by the towel and basin used when Christ washed the disciples’ feet.

Deacons are ordained clergy on a permanent roster of the ELCA. Their vocation is to bridge the life of the church with the realities of everyday life, especially among those who are struggling, overlooked, or living on the margins. Because of this calling, deacons serve in a wide range of settings both inside and outside congregations.

Deacons give voice to the community outside the walls and bring that voice through the doors into the church, as Jesus taught us. Some deacons serve within congregations in roles such as education, music, administration, or outreach. Others serve in hospitals, prisons, social service agencies, schools, or nonprofit organizations. Many Deacons work in ministries that address food insecurity, disability advocacy, chaplaincy, community organizing, rural and urban ministry, and even global leadership.

At the heart of the calling is the work of building connections, bringing the needs of the world to the church, and leading the church out into service.

Brenda S. Lussier serves as a Deacon at Trinity Lutheran Church alongside Pastor Kent Tuohino. She coordinates Community Outreach, with a special focus on the unhoused community, oversees children’s activities, and serves on the worship team. Brenda is married and has two wonderful adult children, Mackenzie and Nick, and two daughters-in-law, Brenda M and Aria. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, and quilting.
