Online registration is now open at http://bit.ly/Theoasis2019. You must be registered online by September 21, 2019 to receive the early registration discount. Online registration closes October 14. Please note – spouses and ministry partners who attend must register online and pay the program fees to share in event meals and attend general sessions.
A limited number of registration scholarships are available, up to $50 maximum. Participants must register online by September 8 and choose the scholarship option. From there, additional instructions will be provided. Scholarship applicants will be notified by email by September 14. Final payment must be made by September 21 to receive scholarship discount.
Theoasis takes place at the Embassy Suites, La Quinta (please note the location change from last year), located at 50-777 Santa Rosa Plaza, La Quinta. Hotel reservations must be made directly with the hotel. A discounted rate of $110 (plus taxes) per night is available through September 27, or until the group block is sold out, whichever comes first. Bishop Yvette Flunder
Founder and Senior Pastor, City of Refuge United Church of Christ
Presiding Bishop, The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries
Bishop Yvette Flunder is a native San Franciscan and third generation preacher with roots in the Church of God in Christ. Bishop Flunder is an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ and holds both masters and doctorate degrees in Ministry from the Pacific School of Religion and the San Francisco Theological Seminary, respectively. In 2003, she was appointed Presiding Bishop of The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries, a multi-denominational coalition of over 56 churches and faith-based organizations from all over the world.
Bishop Flunder is a trustee and adjunct professor at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. She is an active voice for the Religion Council of the Human Rights Campaign, as well as for the National Black Justice Coalition. Bishop Flunder is a highly sought after preacher and religious educator as evidenced by her having spoken at divinity schools nationwide including those at Duke, Yale , Drew, and the New York Theological Seminary. She is the author of Where the Edge Gathers: A Theology of Homiletic Radical Inclusion, published by Pilgrim Press. In addition to her memorable sermons, Bishop Flunder is also known for her beautiful singing voice, made famous through her gospel recordings with Walter Hawkins and the Family, the City of Refuge Choir and Chanticleer.
Michael A. Mata
Community and Faith-Based Program Designer/Administrator
Former Director of the Transformational Urban Leadership Program at Azusa Pacific Seminary
Michael A. Mata has designed and administered community and faith-based programs for over thirty years, particularly in the areas of community development, urban youth work, intercultural relations, organizational and leadership development.
Most recently he was the director of the Transformational Urban Leadership Program at Azusa Pacific Seminary. His prior assignments have included the Tools for Transformation Director for World Vision U.S. Program, the Mildred M. Hutchinson Assistant Professor of Urban Ministry and Director of the Urban Leadership Institute at the Claremont School of Theology. As an ordained minister, he serves as part of the pastoral team at Los Angeles First Church of the Nazarene (a multi-ethnic/multi-congregation church with highly regarded community programs).
Mata’s vast experience and knowledge of church-based community transformation makes him a much-sought-after instructor, speaker, and consultant. He has served on boards and advisory councils of local and national community, ecumenical and academic organizations, and currently serves on the RAND Corporation’s on-going study of the role of Urban Congregations in addressing Health Disparities, Christian Community Development Association, PBS SoCal Community Advisory Board and QueensCare, to name a few.
He holds degrees in Biblical Literature, Religion and Urban Planning.

Tuesday Afternoon Free-Time Options
Tuesday afternoon is yours to do with as you please. Nap, swim, shop, dine, see a movie, explore the desert – it’s your choice. For those who are looking for some guidance, there are a few scheduled options. In addition to the golf tournament listed below, there are two activities taking place at the Embassy Suites. They are:
- Inclusive Yoga for All – Feel comfortable joining this all level class on Tuesday afternoon with Regional Gift Planner and former personal trainer, Lisa Higginbotham.
- Book Discussion – On Tuesday afternoon, Pacifica Synod Bishop Andy Taylor will facilitate a discussion of the book Dear Church: A Love Letter From a Black Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the US by Pastor Lenny Duncan.
A golf tournament will be held the afternoon of Tuesday, October 22 at Palm Desert Country Club (77-200 California Drive, Palm Desert). The cost is $75 per person. To register for the golf tournament, please select the Golf Tournament option found on the Theoasis registration page.
Hawaii Travel Equalization
Rostered ministers from Hawaii who attend Theoasis are eligible for a travel reimbursement of up to $400 towards the cost of their airfare and ground transportation. Please download this equalization form and submit, with receipts, as instructed on the form.
