Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen joined the Fuller faculty as associate professor of systematic theology in 2000 and was named full professor in 2003. He also holds a teaching position at the University of Helsinki as Docent of Ecumenics.
Prior to coming to Fuller, Kärkkäinen served as president and professor at IsoKirja College in Keuruu, Finland. He has taught and lived with his family on three continents: Europe, Asia (Thailand), and North America (USA). He has also lectured and served as visiting professor in various schools around the world. He travels widely and has a command of several languages.
A prolific writer, Kärkkäinen has authored or edited about twenty books in English (and seven in his native language, Finnish), including The Trinity: Global Perspectives (2007), One With God: Salvation as Deification and Justification (2004), and Trinity and Religious Pluralism: The Doctrine of the Trinity in Christian Theology of Religions (2004), as well as more than 150 articles that have appeared in international scholarly journals. He also edited the Global Dictionary of Theology (with William Dyrness, 2008), The Spirit in the World: Emerging Pentecostal Theologies in Global Contexts (2009), and Holy Spirit and Salvation: The Sources of Christian Theology (2010). He recently completed a five-volume series covering all topics of systematic theology titled A Constructive Christian Theology for the Pluralistic World, published by Eerdmans (2013–2017): volume 1: Christ and Reconciliation (2013); 2: Trinity and Revelation (2014); 3: Creation and Humanity (2015); 4: Spirit and Salvation (2016); and 5: Community and Hope (2017). Kärkkäinen is a member of several editorial boards, including the Strategic Initiatives in Systematic Theology series by InterVarsity Press, the Studies in Systematic Theology series by E.J. Brill, and is a reviewer for the International Journal of Systematic Theology.
He has participated in a number of working groups of the World Council of Churches, most recently on “Christian Self-Understanding and Religious Plurality,” and has participated in numerous international theological, missiological, and interfaith consultations, including Edinburgh 2010 and the Conference on World Mission and Evangelism of the World Council of Churches (Athens, 2005). His involvement in Muslim-Christian issues includes the Building Bridges seminars. His ecumenical experience also includes long-term participation in several international bilateral dialogues. For years he served as an external examiner for Wales University.
Kärkkäinen is ordained by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (Minister of Word and Sacrament, 2015) and has served since 2014 as associate pastor (part-time) for the Finnish Lutheran Church in California and Texas (ELCA).

Sarah is a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator-Consultant and a Lutheran pastor (ELCA). She supports congregations and church leaders by leading retreats and workshops and coaching on the connections between Dr. Brené Brown’s research and faith. Sarah has the unique honor of being an ordained clergy member serving as a Case Consultant with the Daring Way™. She has completed 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education and is also trained as a Healthy Congregations facilitator.
Sarah earned a Master of Divinity in 2001 from Luther Seminary where she was a Presidential Scholar and is an ordained Lutheran pastor (ELCA). Her undergraduate degrees in psychology and Spanish are from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN where she was a vocal scholar. Sarah has also served as a chaplain in rural, inner city, and suburban care centers, as well as in a correctional facility and 6 years as a parish pastor.

A golf tournament will be held the afternoon of Tuesday, October 23 at Palm Desert Country Club (77-200 California Drive, Palm Desert). The cost is $75 per person. To register for the golf tournament, please select the Golf Tournament option found on the Theoasis registration page.
On Tuesday afternoon, Pacifica Bishop Andy Taylor will facilitate a discussion of the book Canoeing the Mountains by Tod Bolsinger. Using the story of Lewis, Clark, and Sacagawea as a metaphor for the church today, Bolsinger guides the reader through a discussion of the sort of adaptive leadership that is needed for today’s churches. The book describes how adaptive change works, and delineates the leadership skills and qualities needed to navigate this type of change. Those wishing to participate in the discussion are encouraged to read the book prior to attending Theoasis.

Safe Boundaries Workshop
On Monday, October 22, a Safe Boundaries Workshop will be held from 11:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Palm Desert (45-900 Portola Avenue). The cost is $30 and includes lunch. To attend this workshop, please select the Safe Boundaries option found on the Theoasis registration page.
*As a reminder – All rostered leaders in the Pacifica Synod are encouraged to keep their Safe Boundaries Training current. Please make sure to attend a training workshop every 3 years.
“Tending the Longing: Discernment of Call” Retreat
On Thursday, October 25 through Friday, October 26, following the Theoasis event, a retreat for those discerning their call will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Palm Desert. Whether you are in your ministry discernment (i.e. candidacy, exploring a new call withing your context, exploring a change in call, retirement, struggling with burnout, considering a sabbatical) this retreat is a time set aside to ask honest, open questions and explore where God might be leading you next.
