Our Pacifica Synod Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Work Group is pleased to announce that the “Undoing Racism” Training Workshop postponed from April 2020 has been rescheduled to October 20-22, 2021 (following Theoasis) at Luther Glen Farm Retreat Center. Rostered Ministers are encouraged to attend with a lay leader from your congregation. Pacifica Synod lay members may attend for just $25. Below, Pastor Rick Fry of Ascension Lutheran in San Diego, and a member of the EDI Work Group, shares his experience with the training that will be provided at this event.
The fabric of racism is inextricably woven into the structures of every system and institution in our society, including the church. The workshop will focus on understanding what racism is, where it comes from, how it functions, why it persists and how it can be undone through effective anti-racist organizing with, and in accountability to the communities most impacted by racism.
This will be a faith-based anti-racism workshop that will explore how to bring about change within the church and how the church can participate in ending racism in society. By the end of the workshop, participants will be enabled to take further steps in the long-term task of creating an anti-racist church.
This workshop is open to lay and rostered leaders and will fulfill the 2019 Pacifica Synod resolution requirement for rostered leaders to complete an anti-racism/diversity training at least once every three years. The workshop is limited to 32 participants.
Barbara Crain Major, B.A., M.S.W.
Barbara Major is a community organizer and trainer with over forty years’ experience in many local, national, and international community development efforts. This work includes everything from nurturing leadership development efforts within local communities to assisting institutions in developing strategies to de-institutionalize racism.
Originally trained in Sociology, Barbara is a native of New Orleans and Franklinton Louisiana. Until Hurricane Katrina, Ms. Major served as the chair of the St. Thomas/Irish Channel Consortium, a nationally acclaimed model for holistic community and institutional transformation. For 12 years she was Executive Director of the community driven and controlled St. Thomas Health Clinic. To this day, the St. Thomas Clinic continues to serve the Greater New Orleans underserved and underinsured population.
She is a core anti-racism trainer for The People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond. She connects her local organizing to training in anti-racism with people and institutions that live in or work with struggling communities.
After Hurricane Katrina, Ms. Major served as Co-Chair of the Mayor of New Orleans’ Bring Back New Orleans Commission. She is a co-founder of Citizens United for Economic Equity, a CDFI small business lending institution. The organization was founded by New Orleanians to ensure equitable African American community participation in the rebuilding of New Orleans.
Barbara served as C of the Regional Transit Authority Board of Directors. She also served on the board of the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (NORA). Ms Major’s latest published work is titled “Building a Net that Works” in the book State of The Race. She presently serves as chair of Robert Russell Moton Charter School in New Orleans. She has received numerous awards and citations for her achievements, but says “her family” is the greatest award that God has given her.
The Rev. Joseph Barndt
Joseph Barndt is a Lutheran pastor, community organizer, teacher and writer in the field of race relations and racism. For 50 years his work has focused on training and organizing to dismantle racism, specializing in institutional change and in helping white people understand their role in working for change. He has served as pastor of congregations in Tucson, Arizona; Oakland, California; and The Bronx in New York City. He is the co-founder and was for 18 years director of Crossroads, a Chicago based interfaith ministry that provides training and develops organizing skills and strategies to dismantle systemic and institutionalized racism. He is also presently a core organizer and trainer with the Peoples Institute for Survival and Beyond in New Orleans.
Joseph has written a number of books and articles on racism and race relations, including his two most recent books Understanding and Dismantling Racism: The Twenty-First Century Challenge to White America, and Becoming an Anti-Racist Church: Journeying Toward Wholeness. He presently resides in Watsonville, California, where he continues to write and do consultant training and organizing
Event registration opens on August 19 and will close on October 15 or when the maximum of 32 participants has been reached. Due to space limitations, a maximum of 2 registered participants per congregation/organization will be in place until September 30. If you wish to register more than 2 participants, please register your first 2 participants and contact Terri Robertson (see above) to place the others on a waiting list until September 30. At that point, you will be contacted to confirm space availability.

Program fees include a shared room (no single rooms) and 6 meals (Wednesday dinner through Friday lunch).

Thanks to funding from the Cathryn Wright Trust Fund, Pacifica Synod Lay Leaders may attend this workshop at a cost of $25. Lay leaders from outside the Pacifica Synod must pay the early bird/full price as listed above.
A limited amount of financial aid for Pacifica Synod Rostered leaders (a 50% fee reduction) is available on a first-come, first-served basis. You must indicate on the registration form that you are requesting this option and include the specific reason for your request to be considered. You will be notified within 2 days as to the outcome of your request. Once the funds are depleted, the option to request them will no longer be available as a selection on the registration form.
To provide a safe environment for all participants, all attending must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination status at the time of check-in.
